Train spotting notes

  • Trainspotting was released in 1996
  • The novel it was based off was written by Irvine Welsh
  • The plot concentrates on a heroine addicted 'hero' attempting to quit his habits despite his unsupported similarly addicted friends.
  • It was directed by Danny Boyle, Written by Andrew MacDonald, produced by John Hodge
  • The budget was 3.5 million
  • Screen rights had to be claimed so that the novel could be transformed into a movie
  • The screen rights could not be brought straight away as they had already been claimed by Noel Gay, despite him not having plans to produce the film.
  • Scott Rudin offered them 250,000 to secure the locations needed to film.
  • Recces checked each location making sure they were suitable for filming e.g. checking lighting
  • Preproduction normally takes 4 to seven weeks, in this time casting, location scouting, costumes and the overall look of the film was developed.
  • Ewan Macgregor was a prime choice from the start, due to this role in 'Shallow grave'
  • Many of the actors cast were in fact also in 'Shallow grave'
  • The set of TS was drawn from real life but also exaggerated and stylised. Making it more interesting than a simple 'real life documentary style'
  • There are about 30 different sets used in the film
  • About 6 weeks before production props were bought, majority of this was 'cheap junk'
  • Despite most productions hiring costumes, TS borrow from whoever they could.
  • Shooting lasted for 35 days, Filming 5 days a week
  • Shooting was difficult due to day light.

you would benefit from specifically outlining what falls within preproduction.

  1. Some useful notes here, however you would benefit from specifically outlining what falls within preproduction.

Make sure you revise the stages of pre production & production from this.
